On Friday, June 5th and Saturday June 6th, there will be half-day excursions and encounters at central locations. These events will be conceptualized and led by experts and activists who will take you to their favorite hotspots of metropolitan struggle – places where they intervene as activists or conduct engaged research.
The themes are varied. They start with “classical” INURA issues like housing, gentrification, public space, urban heritage, and mobility but extend beyond to the spatial aspects of gender, migration, minorities, the non-human, urban ecology and climate, our seismic life, and practices of artistic or professional activism. You name it. We will revisit classic sites from the first INURA activities in Istanbul—the 2008 workshop and the 2009 conference—and build on them, while also exploring new horizons.
Perspectives will be multifaceted. Formats and levels of physical activity will vary as well: Some tours require a lot of walking, while others may simply visit a local NGO’s tiny “office.” Ideally, we’ll offer a balanced mix.
On Sunday, June 7th, we explore the metropolitan space beyond its historical and geographical center. One bus will take us to the western peripheries, a second to the peripheries of the center in the greater Golden Horn area, and a third will cross to Asia to visit the eastern peripheries. These bus tours will be a conceptual mix of visiting neighborhood initiatives and study tours.
