METROHAN
The introductory session of the INURA26ISTANBUL Conference City Now ! on June 4th will take place at the Metrohan Building (Turkish: “The Subway Offices”) Nestled in the historic urban fabric of Beyoğlu, Metrohan has held a distinctive place in Istanbul’s collective memory since 1914 where it housed the headquarters of IETT, for the administration of metropolitan mass transit, as well as electricity and city gas distribution. The historical office block is placed ontop the entry of the “Tünel”, the second oldest underground line worldwide. Standing as one of the defining buildings of Tünel Square, it was restored recently by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and brought back into public use with new functions.
The first two floors host a cultural block after the renewal. Exhibitions, talks, concerts, theatre performances, … add a new energy to Istanbul’s dynamic art and cultural scene. With its historic character and contemporary cultural program, Metrohan offers a distinctive setting where different formats find a shelter. Since its recent reopening, Metrohan has presented a number of exhibitions; several of them based on spatial research.
HTGT: Tünel square is located at the southern end of the 1,6 km long İstiklal street (historical Grand Rue de pera) You can walk it all the way down from Taksim Square, following the monorail track of the (not anymore !) Nostalgic Tramline T2 to the terminal station Tünel. Alternately you can take the fake-early 20th century model tram along the pedestrianized high street.
The entry of the building is on the little side street Erkani Harp.

SALT GALATA
SALT (in Turkish: “sole” or “absolute”) is a crossborder /transdisciplinary institution, which grew out of the fusion of three in 2010: The Banque Ottoman Archives and Research Center for social and economic history, The Garanti Galeri specialised on design, architecture and urbanism, as well as Garanti Platform Center for Contemporary Art.
SALT has two locations, SALT Beyoğlu is on the Istiklal street, and SALT Galata, where we will held our public panel on June 5th is located on Bankalar st. in Karaköy, Salt Galata occupies a historic building originally designed for the Imperial Ottoman Bank commissioned to the Levantine architect Alexandre Vallaury. From 1892 to 1999, the building served as the bank’s headquarters, which served as a private bank during the Republic and was later acquired by the Garanti Bank.
After undergoing various structural alterations over time, it was transformed through an adaptive reuse project that revealed its original architectural character, and reopened in November 2011 as Salt Galata.
Salt Galata houses several cultural and research spaces, including Research Halls, (sections for the public as well as for registered researchers), a specialist arts library, an auditorium for talks and conferences, exhibition spaces, workshop rooms and other event venues.The permanent exhibition features documents from the Ottoman Bank Museum Collection, which sheds light on the institution’s nearly 150-year history.
HTGT: The venue is very close to the Galata bridge / Karaköy side. After the parallel excursions, your guides will take you there.

TAK Kadıköy – Design, Research, Participation
TAK Kadıköy is a creative platform supported by the Kadıköy Municipality, dedicated to participatory design, urban research, and collaborative production. It provides an open environment for workshops, talks, and experimental urban projects.

Istanbul Bilgi University – Santral Istanbul Campus
The former Silahtarağa power plant, a major industrial heritage site, was innovatively redeveloped in 2006 as the Santral Istanbul campus for Bilgi University comprising of educational and museum sections. Its architectural design, which emerged from the university’s own master class studios, has become an iconic city landmark. Having previously hosted the 2009 INURA conference, we will return to hold our final evaluation meeting in the former boiler house.
