ADD-ON MODULE I | June 3rd, Afternoon
Istanbul 101: Intro to the Urban DNA
This tour is a crash course: How do we read the urban DNA of Istanbul? Within a compact, walkable area, we will explore diverse phenomena of urban development from the 19th century to today. How has topography shaped settlement historically? What are the typical housing typologies, and how should we understand their genealogy?
ADD-ON MODULE II | June 4th, Morning
Taksim: The Symbolic Center of a Nation-State
The undisputed center of the nation is not a historical place at all. A mere 80 years ago, it was deliberately “made” and placed in its current location. Taksim is far more than the shapeless void we see today—it comes with a full historical package. It is the tip of an urban iceberg of considerable dimension: built, unbuilt, and rebuilt. Greater Taksim is that one and only space of fierce contestation, where the constitution is constantly written and rewritten in stone.

Our Joker
This is our flexible option, in case of high demand for this time slot: a walking tour in the center that we will design interactively with participants using our forum. Let’s frame it with a phrase and see where it goes: In Istanbul, as in many Mediterranean port cities, poverty is often located at the center. Imagine the potential for conflict embedded here in the age of the New Metropolitan Mainstream!
